Tim Smith
Tim Smith is a pastor, CEO of Center of Life, and a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh. Although Center of Life was officially founded in 2001, Smith's connection to the Hazelwood community runs deep—he has lived, worked, and volunteered in Hazelwood since the 1980s. His passion for supporting children and families inspired him to create Center of Life, a nonprofit and community empowerment organization rooted in his personal philosophy, which continues to guide its mission and impact today.
Smith's philosophy centers on economics, environment, and empowerment. He believes in equipping people with the tools to succeed and leads economic revitalization in Hazelwood and similar communities affected by systemic inequities. His approach emphasizes belonging, significance, and security for every individual, and connects each person's natural talents with meaningful opportunities and education.
Smith brings extensive knowledge, compassion, and creativity to Center of Life. A graduate of Westinghouse High School, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, he also draws on his professional background as an investment banker and National Youth Network Coordinator to guide the organization's growth and sustainability.
When asked what he loves most about Hazelwood, Smith answered: "The people… because everything is about people. The people [in Hazelwood] are my professors, and Hazelwood is the university."
