Melvin Cole
Melvin Cole, born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, witnessed firsthand the challenges facing his community. He felt the weight of the growing number of young people experiencing crime, incarceration, and worse. Surrounded by drug use and violence in his own family, Cole believed he was limited to just two paths in life. His athletic talent became a lifeline. As a standout football player at Bowling Green State University, sports gave him focus and opportunity until a serious injury derailed his path. His loss of purpose led to choices that resulted in a 45-year prison sentence.
During his time in prison, Cole experienced a deep personal awakening and invigoration of faith. He made a promise to dedicate his life to service if given a second chance. Against all odds, he was released after just 30 months. Grateful for his second chance, he has honored his commitment to service ever since.
After returning home, Cole founded a youth sports program to support at-risk youth in his community. The program's success inspired him to expand his efforts. He went on to establish P.U.R.E. Academy (Progressing Under Restraints and Extremes), a school devoted to helping young men find community, academic success, and personal growth.
Cole sees himself in every student he serves. His journey from adversity to leadership drives his mission to show young men that their circumstances do not define their potential. Through partnerships with the State of Tennessee, the City of Memphis, and a network of local businesses and community leaders, Cole continues to guide the next generation toward lives of confidence, purpose, and hope.
