Commanders to sit Jayden Daniels for final three games of 2025 season

Jayden Daniels' second season is over with three games remaining on the schedule.

The Washington Commanders will shut down the quarterback for the rest of the 2025 season, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday, per sources informed of the situation.

Rapoport added that Daniels was re-evaluated on Monday and is not yet cleared after he aggravated an elbow injury in Week 14.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn later confirmed that Daniels will miss the final three games, adding the decision to shut him down was "part medical, part team." Quinn told reporters, however, that Daniels would continue to participate in practice this year.

The 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year has suffered through an injury-riddled second season.

Daniels suffered a knee sprain in Week 2, forcing him to miss two contests. He returned in Week 5 but made it through just two tilts before a hamstring strain in Week 7 caused him to miss one game.

The QB returned in Week 9 and suffered a gruesome elbow injury late in a blowout loss. Daniels missed three tilts with the elbow injury. In Week 14, he exited early in a shutout loss after falling on his elbow after an interception. Daniels did not play in the Commanders' 29-21 win on Sunday against the New York Giants.

There will be no fourth return in 2025.

After a sensational 12-5 rookie campaign, Daniels saw his numbers fall across the board, even when on the field.

He completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 1,262 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. The quarterback added 58 rush attempts for 278 yards and two scores. The Commanders went 2-5 in Daniels' seven starts.

The decision to shut down Daniels makes sense for a Washington club that was eliminated from postseason contention earlier this month.

The hope is that the rest will allow the dynamic QB to get fully healthy heading into the 2026 campaign.

Marcus Mariota, who started Sunday's win, which broke an eight-game losing skid, will remain the starter. Veteran Josh Johnson is also on the roster, with Sam Hartman on the practice squad.

The Commanders end the season with home games against the Eagles and Cowboys, and close the campaign at Philadelphia.
