Gennaro Filice 2026 NFL mock draft 2.0: Cowboys and Chiefs shake up top 10 with two trades

Hello, draftniks! I come to you with yet another simulation of how the first round could play out in Pittsburgh. But I value your time and inherently can't help but wonder ...

Are you all mocked out yet?

By this point in the pre-draft process, the concept of a mock draft is no longer novel. I know this. And the groupthink that inevitably takes hold of the exercise only adds to its general tediousness.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to spice up the broth with a couple of trades -- trades that shake up the top 10! Oh, and one of them ultimately leads to a second quarterback coming off the board in Round 1!! Are you not entertained?!? Mildly stimulated?? Awake? I'll take it.

Without further ado, here is the 10,765,493rd mock of this draft cycle. Enjoy!

NOTE: NFL Network and 麻豆国产 will have live coverage of the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23-25.

Pick
1
Fernando Mendoza
Indiana · QB · Junior (RS)

Mendoza in Pittsburgh, choosing instead to watch the proceedings with family and friends in Miami. That party will reach a crescendo mere minutes after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell officially puts Las Vegas on the clock. Frankly, it feels like this selection has already been made, with everyone envisioning the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in silver and black for months now. One request, Raiders: Please don鈥檛 waste everyone鈥檚 time on draft night pretending to wait for the mythical 鈥淕odfather offer.鈥 Get the pick in, and let鈥檚 get on to the dramatic portion of the event, which appears set to begin in earnest at No. 2.

Pick
2
Arvell Reese
Ohio State · LB/Edge · Junior

Like every other mock drafter, I鈥檝e been going back and forth between Reese and David Bailey in this spot. (OK, at times, I鈥檝e also pondered the outside chance Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey are sharing a hearty laugh over the arm-length debate, fully planning to snag Rueben Bain Jr.) Reese is a developmental player as an edge rusher, and the Jets are in a developmental state as a franchise, so it鈥檚 sensible to believe New York could pass on the more polished QB hunters in favor of the raw hybrid with wildly enticing upside.

Pick
3
David Bailey
Texas Tech · Edge · Senior

PROJECTED TRADE WITH CARDINALS

In lying season, it鈥檚 impossible to know when you can take people at their word. But with Dallas holding two first-round picks for the first time since 2008, Jerry Jones recently acknowledged that he has pondered making a move.

"I've looked at that mirror a lot, about how to go up and down and trade and do those kinds of things,鈥 the Cowboys owner said at the Annual League Meeting.

What if Jerry ultimately decides to flip those two first-rounders (Nos. 12 and 20) for the third overall draft slot, where he can snatch up last season鈥檚 FBS co-leader in sacks? The Cowboys acquired the extra 1 (No. 20) in the Micah Parsons trade, so it鈥檚 narratively attractive to use it to acquire a fresh edge terror. And I like how this hypothetical deal resets the board in today鈥檚 thought experiment.

Pick
4
Sonny Styles
Ohio State · LB · Senior

Robert Saleh has enjoyed the luxury of having Fred Warner on his defense in four separate seasons. He鈥檚 only gone against the modern-linebacking standard-bearer for a day, but that experience certainly left an impression.

"Fred is ... I'll go ahead and say it: The guy is a first-ballot Hall of Famer," a few days after his Jets' 32-19 loss to the 49ers back in 2024. "And I don't know if a lot of people recognize that, but 鈥 at times during the game, it felt like there were three of him out there, the way he was running around. And so, it was a different feeling being on the opposite sideline for the first time ever in his career, to watch it. He did a lot of things that ... There are a couple of plays that are touchdowns versus 25 other teams."

I鈥檓 not saying Sonny Styles is Fred Warner 2.0, but that鈥檚 the comp everyone wants to make. So it鈥檚 natural to assume Saleh has at least considered what his new D as Titans head coach would look like with the athletic freak manning the middle.

Pick
5
Jeremiyah Love
Notre Dame · RB · Junior

John Harbaugh has openly expressed his belief that you have to take the best player available when you hold such a lofty draft pick.

鈥淵ou're talking about a guy that you would like to see someday , if possible,鈥 the Giants鈥 new head man said on Mike Francesa's podcast back in February.

Love is universally viewed as one of this draft鈥檚 elite prospects. Is he compelling enough to entice a Giants team that doesn鈥檛 appear to have a dire need at running back? It鈥檚 not that hard to imagine -- especially if you saw the gnarly ankle injury that brought Cam Skattebo鈥檚 enchanting debut season to a screeching halt.

Pick
6
Rueben Bain Jr.
Miami · Edge · Junior

PROJECTED TRADE WITH BROWNS

Having already spent a first-round pick on a pass rusher with substandard dimensions in George Karlaftis -- and then giving that player a $93 million extension -- Brett Veach and Andy Reid don鈥檛 seem entirely troubled with shorter arms along the defensive front. Granted, Karlaftis (32 5/8) has nearly two inches on Bain (30 7/8), but the latter feels like the kind of guy who could provide disruption from multiple alignments -- a possibility that must entice Steve Spagnuolo. Kansas City sends Cleveland its third-round pick (No. 74 overall) to leap up three slots and grab a defender who nearly single-handedly wrecked this past season鈥檚 College Football Playoff.

Pick
7
Caleb Downs
Ohio State · S · Junior

If players were drafted on game tape alone -- putting aside things like positional value, physical prowess and athletic testing -- Downs would be a top-five pick all day long. In this world, the Commanders happily pounce on the cerebral safety at No. 7, continuing a much-needed makeover of Dan Quinn鈥檚 defense.

Pick
8
Mansoor Delane
LSU · CB · Senior

Despite LSU鈥檚 rich tradition of NFL production at cornerback, the local pro team has only drafted one Tigers CB in its six-decade history: Michael Mayes, a fourth-round pick back in 1989. Could Mickey Loomis take a dip in that pool this year? The body-language analysts among us liked the general manager鈥檚 at LSU鈥檚 pro day.

Pick
9
Carnell Tate
Ohio State · WR · Junior

PROJECTED TRADE WITH CHIEFS

Moving down three spots, picking up a fifth top-75 selection and still getting their pick of the WR litter? What a dream scenario for the Browns. Tate stays in the Buckeye State, giving Cleveland a much-needed boost to a receiver room that didn鈥檛 produce a single 100-yard game last season.

Pick
10
Jermod McCoy
Tennessee · CB · Junior

With the top three pass rushers off the board, the Bengals turn to pass coverage. McCoy鈥檚 evaluation is muddied by the fact that he didn鈥檛 play a snap in 2025 while recovering from a torn ACL, but the 2024 tape鈥檚 impressive, and the 4.38-second 40-yard dash at his pro-day workout doesn鈥檛 hurt.

Pick
11
Makai Lemon
USC · WR · Junior

Handing Malik Willis a mid-tier quarterback contract made business sense to me. But if the Dolphins want the 26-year-old to flip the switch from intriguing prospect to franchise player, they need to give him some arrows in the quiver. After trading away Jaylen Waddle, Miami has a receiving corps that is fronted by Malik Washington, Tutu Atwell and Jalen Tolbert. Makai can give Malik a versatile target who plays much bigger than his 5-foot-11, 192-pound size.

Pick
12
Francis Mauigoa
Miami · OT · Junior

PROJECTED TRADE WITH COWBOYS

Mauigoa鈥檚 frequently mocked to the Cardinals -- at No. 3 overall. If Arizona is able to select the first offensive tackle after turning one first-rounder into two, Monti Ossenfort will be one happy general manager. Especially if the move ultimately puts him in position to throw the bonus pick at the franchise鈥檚 biggest need

Pick
13
KC Concepcion
Texas A&M · WR · Junior

Yes, I鈥檓 throwing a curveball into the perceived receiver pecking order, with Concepcion as the third pass catcher off the board. The biggest knock on his game is the drops -- Pro Football Focus credited him with 19 over three college seasons, including seven in each of the past two. But Concepcion鈥檚 a prolific separator -- and when he catches the ball, the man鈥檚 a bursty YAC monster who鈥檇 supply something new to the Rams鈥 Puka Nacua/Davante Adams-led receiving corps. Not to mention, his deft route-running gets the full seal of approval from . When Mr. Reception Perception says a wideout is I take note.

Pick
14
Spencer Fano
Utah · OL · Junior

In the wake of Tyler Linderbaum鈥檚 bank-breaking departure from Baltimore in free agency, the Ravens have a gaping hole at center. So, naturally, I鈥檓 giving them Utah's right tackle. Wait, what? That鈥檚 right: Fano鈥檚 sub-33-inch arm length induces concerns about his NFL viability as a bookend blocker, but his hyper athleticism and people-moving ability in the run game raise the possibility of a conversion to the interior. In fact, he鈥檚 fully open to a move and took some center reps at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Pick
15
Olaivavega Ioane
Penn State · OG · Junior (RS)

Freshly retired franchise icon Lavonte David just told us Baker Mayfield took a beating last season. Meanwhile, after averaging the fourth-most rushing yards per game in 2024, the Bucs plummeted to 21st in 鈥25. Seems like it鈥檚 time for Tampa to eat its veggies again on the offensive line. Ioane isn鈥檛 just everyone鈥檚 top guard in this draft -- he feels like one of the safer prospects in the class.

Pick
16
New York Jets
(via IND)
Jordyn Tyson
Arizona State · WR · Junior (RS)

This might be the best all-around receiver in this class. My colleague Bucky Brooks lists him as such. The problem is his extensive injury history: The Arizona State product missed multiple games in each of his four college seasons due to various health issues. Still, it seems like someone's gonna roll the dice in Round 1. Tyson鈥檚 a Thursday night talent.

Pick
17
Blake Miller
Clemson · OT · Senior

In this future I鈥檝e created, Lions fans can鈥檛 believe their luck. Enticing options abound at OT and Edge, the two most dire needs in Detroit. Which is why the announcement of Blake Miller鈥檚 name raises some eyebrows. It鈥檚 not a sexy pick. Other guys remaining on my hypothetical board have higher theoretical upside. But in the real world, the Lions need immediate help at tackle following the release of Taylor Decker. No time for a project. And Miller oozes experience, having started every Clemson football game -- all 54 of them -- over the past four seasons. Penei Sewell goes back to his college position on the blind side, and Miller takes over at RT.

Pick
18
Dillon Thieneman
Oregon · S · Junior

I just can鈥檛 get away from this perfect paring. And neither can anyone else -- as my fellow mockophiles can attest. It鈥檚 not hard to understand why: With Harrison Smith seemingly walking off into the sunset after patrolling Minnesota鈥檚 secondary since Barack Obama鈥檚 first term as president, the Vikings need a safety. And Thieneman provides the kind of versatility Brian Flores lives to exploit.

Pick
19
Kenyon Sadiq
Oregon · TE · Junior

Sadiq鈥檚 raw college production doesn鈥檛 blow you away, but his freakishness does. At a rocked-up 241 pounds, he ran the fastest 40-yard dash by a tight end in modern combine history (4.39 seconds), nearly jumped out of Lucas Oil Stadium (43.5-inch vertical leap, 11-foot-1 broad jump) and pumped out 26 bench reps for good measure. It鈥檇 be up to Dave Canales and to maximize all that athleticism, but Bryce Young presumably wouldn鈥檛 mind having Sadiq join reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan and promising big slot Jalen Coker.

Pick
20
Ty Simpson
Alabama · QB · Junior (RS)

PROJECTED TRADE WITH COWBOYS (THIS PICK VIA PACKERS)

Receiving an invitation to the draft does not guarantee first-round selection. But that doesn鈥檛 stop us from annually speculating about the league鈥檚 thinking in compiling the guest list. Widely considered this class鈥 QB2, Simpson was just revealed as one of the 16 players who will be in Pittsburgh later this month. Mike LaFleur had some nice things to say about the team鈥檚 combine meeting with the Alabama quarterback, while rightfully underscoring that the time-limited encounter lasted . In this simulation, the Cardinals鈥 new head coach gets some fresh blood at the game鈥檚 most important position, possibly spoiling a Pittsburgh plan to select Simpson at No. 21.

Pick
21
Kadyn Proctor
Alabama · OL · Junior

From center through right tackle, Pittsburgh is in fine shape, but the left side of the offensive line has issues. LG Isaac Seumalo just departed in free agency, while LT Broderick Jones has yet to live up to his first-round pedigree, and he鈥檚 currently recovering from spinal fusion surgery. Opinions are mixed on whether the gargantuan Proctor projects better as a tackle or guard in the NFL. Pittsburgh has a place to put him, one way or another.

Pick
22
Keldric Faulk
Auburn · Edge · Junior

At 6-6, 276 pounds, Faulk offers the kind of physicality, frame and run-stuffing game Jim Harbaugh fancies. He鈥檚 raw as a pass rusher, though, which isn鈥檛 entirely surprising for one of the youngest prospects in this draft class. In L.A., Faulk could learn a thing or two from Khalil Mack -- who鈥檚 back on a one-year, $18 million deal -- and eventually comprise an imposing edge duo with breakout Pro Bowler Tuli Tuipulotu.

Pick
23
Akheem Mesidor
Miami · Edge · Senior

In the "Game recognize game" department, perennial Pro Bowler Maxx Crosby recently waxed poetic about Mesidor on his podcast, co-signing the high-motor Hurricane鈥檚 pass-rushing toolbox while arguing the advanced age makes him plug-and-play on Day 1. The fact that Mesidor鈥檚 already 25 isn鈥檛 the only potential red flag -- there鈥檚 also a lengthy injury history. Still, this feels like good value for the edge-needy Eagles.

Pick
24
Monroe Freeling
Georgia · OT · Junior

With a hype train that鈥檚 been chugging along for months, Freeling could be long gone by this point. The concern is that he enters the NFL with just 18 college starts under his belt. But in a draft class that鈥檚 light on true left tackle prospects, this long, athletic specimen garners serious attention. The Browns would be thrilled to land him with their second pick of the first round. And Freeling鈥檚 inevitable growing pains wouldn鈥檛 be the end of the world for a rebuilding team with a first-year head coach.

Pick
25
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Toledo · S · Senior

Free agency devoured nearly the entire safety position from last year鈥檚 NFC North championship roster. Chicago did add Super Bowl champ Coby Bryant -- who鈥檒l take over for Kevin Byard at free safety -- but the Bears still need an enforcer to replace Jaquan Brisker. Insert the 6-3 1/2, 201-pound McNeil-Warren, who throws his body around and turns the ball over (SEE: 13 takeaways over the past three years).

Pick
26
Cashius Howell
Texas A&M · Edge · Senior

Already possessing a pair of sizable starting outside linebackers in Greg Rousseau and Bradley Chubb, the sack-hungry Bills could be intrigued by this fastball off the edge. Howell鈥檚 30 1/4-inch arm length is a legit concern, but new Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard spent the past two years in Denver watching Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper terrorize quarterbacks with substandard measurements.

Pick
27
Caleb Lomu
Utah · OT · Sophomore (RS)

As I stressed last week, San Francisco needs to find its successor to Trent Williams at left tackle. Spencer Fano has been the more-talked-about Utah OT throughout the pre-draft process, but Lomu actually manned the Utes鈥 blind side over the past two seasons, offering a more prototypical frame for the position. Presuming the 49ers ultimately work through this contract standoff with Williams, they could select the unrefined Lomu and allow him to marinate behind the soon-to-be 38-year-old who will receive a gold jacket in his 40s.

Pick
28
Max Iheanachor
Arizona State · OT · Senior

For a second straight offseason, the Texans find themselves remaking the offensive line. But after observing Houston sign (and re-sign) some viable veterans, I鈥檇 like to see more of a long-view investment in C.J. Stroud鈥檚 protection. A Nigeria native who moved to the States as a teenager, Iheanachor didn鈥檛 start playing football until 2021, when he went out for the JUCO team at East Los Angeles College. But the former basketball and soccer player possesses rare athletic traits at 6-6 and 321 pounds. Swift growth over the last three years at Arizona State makes Iheanachor one of the most tantalizing developmental prospects in this draft.

Pick
29
Colton Hood
Tennessee · CB · Sophomore (RS)

Considering Kansas City acquired this extra first-rounder in the Trent McDuffie trade, it鈥檚 appropriate to use it on a cornerback -- but it鈥檚 also kind of necessary. Jaylen Watson, the Chiefs鈥 other starting corner last season, followed McDuffie to the Rams in free agency. Suddenly, K.C. needs a CB -- one who鈥檚 comfortable playing press-man coverage, a staple of Steve Spagnuolo鈥檚 scheme. Hood鈥檚 right at home in press.

Pick
30
Miami Dolphins
(via DEN)
T.J. Parker
Clemson · Edge · Junior

Jeff Hafley takes over a defense that鈥檚 riddled with holes in Miami. Chop Robinson is the Dolphins鈥 top edge rusher -- at least in theory, but he鈥檚 coming off a highly disappointing sophomore campaign. Here鈥檚 a different kind of edge -- more size and power than speed and bend -- who would immediately upgrade Miami鈥檚 26th-ranked run defense.

Pick
31
Omar Cooper Jr.
Indiana · WR · Junior (RS)

The Romeo Doubs pickup was solid, but Drake Maye鈥檚 receiving corps still isn鈥檛 up to snuff following the release of Stefon Diggs. Cooper鈥檚 a well-rounded player with a mature game that could immediately fill the slot role in New England.

Pick
32
Avieon Terrell
Clemson · CB · Junior

At 5-10 3/4, 186 pounds, Avieon鈥檚 a touch smaller than his older brother, Falcons corner A.J. Terrell. But don鈥檛 let the lighter frame fool you: The 21-year-old plays with an intoxicating edge. And it gets results, like eight forced fumbles over the past two seasons. Avieon offers inside/outside versatility, with many projecting him as an NFL nickel. Long story short, the reigning Super Bowl champs add another feisty, versatile cover man to their collection.
