Not long after requesting a trade, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and the New York Giants have reached an impasse in their extension talks and a resolution is likely to come prior to next week's 2026 NFL Draft, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday night, per sources.
New York has engaged with teams regarding a potential trade, and those talks will continue with the arrival of the draft likely marking a point in which the Giants have been able to fully gauge interest in Lawrence and can move forward with a decision, Rapoport reported.
The latest Lawrence development comes after general manager Joe Schoen had stated earlier Tuesday that there was no deadline to resolve the Lawrence situation while echoing head coach John Harbaugh's previous comments that the Giants wanted Lawrence to remain with the team.
Lawrence requested a trade, initially reported on April 6, after extension talks had failed to materialize.
Lawrence, 28, has two seasons left on a four-year, $90 million deal. At an average annual salary of $22.5 million, he's ranked 11th in the league, and is coming off arguably his worst season, having registered career lows of 31 tackles and half a sack in 17 starts.
The 2025 season -- one in which the Giants went 4-13 to finish last in the NFC East -- snapped a streak of three straight Pro Bowl selections for "Sexy Dexy."
There's unlikely to be a shortage of willing suitors, among them potentially the Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears or Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the team looking to add Lawrence would likely be on the hook for compensation sent to the Giants as well as locking up the dancing DT on an extension.
Lawrence was the 17th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft -- taken 11 spots after the Giants picked quarterback Daniel Jones, who's now with the Colts.
In seven seasons (109 games), Lawrence has posted 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks, 103 QB hits, 40 tackles for loss and 15 pass breakups.
