Jets fire DC Steve Wilks after giving up 48 points in loss to Jaguars

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has made a big change to his coaching staff with three games remaining.

Glenn announced Monday that defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has been fired.

Chris Harris, the passing game coordinator, will handle play-calling duties for the final three weeks.

"I thought it was time to make a change," Glenn told reporters. "I'm going to make the decision that's best for this organization at all times."

The Jets' defense has been woeful most of the season, ranking 30th in points allowed and 20th in yards through 14 games.

Sunday's 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars was yet another frustrating performance from Gang Green, which got lit up by Trevor Lawrence for five touchdown passes and 330 yards passing. New York also allowed 108 rushing yards.

The Jets have struggled on all three levels. Glenn's D ranks 30th in QB pressures (72), tied for 31st in sacks (22) and has missed 95 tackles, sixth-most. Through 14 weeks, the Jets don't have a single interception.

Wilks joined Glenn's staff this season after a year out of the NFL. He last coordinated the San Francisco 49ers in their run to the Super Bowl in 2023 but was fired after the season.

Glenn moving on from a coordinator mid-season is the latest move that mirrors his former boss, Dan Campbell in Detroit. Campbell demoted then-OC Anthony Lynn midway through his first season with the Lions in 2021, taking over play-calling. Glenn is hoping to find similar long-term success as he attempts to rebuild the Jets.

Wilks' firing comes late in the season, as the 3-11 Jets finish with games against the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.
