Fullbacks, once the offensive crown jewels of the sport, are somewhat of a dying breed these days.
That isn't stopping John Kuhn.
The 33-year-old Kuhn had been clamoring for another chance to play and made his desires public, saying "I want to play because I still enjoy it, I still love it, I'm still in shape, I'm still ready to go," in an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio. After New Orleans lost fullback Austin Johnson, the Saints were in need of help, even if the position is just a part-time role in their offense.
It's the third straight season in which Kuhn will play on a one-year contract -- he signed back-to-back one-year deals in Green Bay in 2014 and 2015. Kuhn made the in 2014 and 2015 -- before his time ran out with the Packers.
Fullbacks often go replaced entirely by a second or third tight end in some schemes. Despite a reduced role in Green Bay, and likely a similar role in New Orleans, Kuhn's signing is proof that in today's game.
