Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown is emotionally conflicted about the recent trade of running back David Montgomery to Houston.
"I'm sick. Selfishly, I'm sick because I love D-Mo," the receiver said on , which he co-hosts with his brother, Equanimeous. "One of my favorite teammates, no matter what the situation was. We knew that he wanted more carries and wanted to play more. He never made it about himself. He was always all about the team, which I know is hard sometimes, especially in his position."
The Lions agreed to trade the backup running back to Houston in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2026, a future seventh-round selection and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs. The move came after Montgomery was frustrated with his dwindling role behind Jahmyr Gibbs.
St. Brown underscored the feeling of most Lions fans, believing the 29-year-old deserved a shot to top a depth chart, but he wasn't curtailing Gibbs' burgeoning role. Getting a fourth-round pick plus additional assets is a positive return for the team.
"He's an RB1 on 31 other teams," St. Brown said of Montgomery. "He's damn near RB1 for us, but it's like, you got two guys, two really good running backs, only one running back can play, which kind of sucks. It's kind of like a quarterback situation. Although running backs do rotate, only one running back plays. Whereas receiver, you can have two or three on the field."
Perhaps St. Brown is getting over his skis suggesting Montgomery would start on 31 teams, but he's definitely the chart-topper in Houston, where he'll pair with second-year back Woody Marks.
St. Brown believes his former teammate is headed to a good situation on a Houston squad that has won a playoff game each of the past three seasons but hasn't been able to get past the Divisional Round.
"Selfishly, I'm upset, but I'm also really happy for D-Mo because I know how much he wanted to have a bigger role on an offense, and I think he's going to get that in Houston," he said. "They got a crazy defense. They got receivers. They got a quarterback. They got a good team. So he's going to a good team where he's going to be able to be the primary back, and I think he's going to make a lot of noise.
"I'm upset, but I'm happy for him. I love D-Mo."
