The Miami Dolphins have agreed to trade safety Minkah Fitzpatrick within the division to the New York Jets, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday, per sources.
Miami will get back a 2026 seventh-round pick for Fitzpatrick, who will sign a three-year, $40 million deal with the Jets upon completion of the trade.
The AFC East swap cannot become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday.
Fitzpatrick, 29, spent the 2025 season in Miami following six seasons in Pittsburgh. New Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker coached Fitzpatrick last season with the Dolphins.
Safety was a big position of need in New York. Malachi Moore is one building block, but with Andre Cisco and Tony Adams heading to free agency, it was a spot that needed reinforcements.
The Jets had the indignity of going the entire 2025 season without an interception and badly needed playmakers on defense. Fitzpatrick, with 21 career INTs, reasonably can help with that, although he had only one pick last season and two over his past 42 NFL games.
Fitzpatrick was originally a first-round pick of the Dolphins in 2018 before being traded to the Steelers the following year. He's a five-time Pro Bowler and has been named first-team All-Pro three times.
