Kevin Byard is reuniting with his former coach in a new home.
The three-time All-Pro safety is signing a one-year, $9 million deal with the New England Patriots, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday, per sources.
Byard's move to the northeast brings him back together with head coach Mike Vrabel, for whom Byard played in Tennessee from 2018 to 2023.
Under Vrabel, Byard established himself as one of the NFL's best safeties, logging 19 interceptions, 43 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and 481 tackles over their first five years together. Byard added one more interception to that tally in 2023 before the Titans shipped him off to Philadelphia in an October 2023 trade with the Eagles, a departure that preceded Vrabel's exit by less than three months.
Since then, Byard has become a somewhat of a mercenary, spending the remainder of the 2023 season with the Eagles before signing with Chicago in 2024. He flirted with a career-high in interceptions in 2025, snagging a league-high seven picks while patrolling the back half of the Bears defense that helped Chicago reach the Divisional Round.
Despite his age -- Byard turns 33 in August -- the veteran's success as a persistent ballhawk in 2025 has earned him another opportunity with a contender entering 2026. The familiar face of Vrabel (as well as the $9 million offered) likely made such a decision easier for Byard, who will line up alongside standout rookie Craig Woodson in a strong Patriots secondary.
